Mardi Gras (French for Fat Tuesday) is a holiday celebrated as a day of feasting before Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of Lent. For all of us who couldn’t make it to New Orleans this year, let’s look at some places and ways we can celebrate here in Jersey City!
First, start off with some southern food! South House will be serving up some special Mardi Gras food and drink specials ($8.00 Hurricanes, $5.00 daiquiris, $5.00 rum drinks and $10.00 Absinthe cocktails). Hurricanes are a classic Fat Tuesday drink which includes lots of rum and fruit juice and is usually served in a large glass. They are so delicious and potent, most places only allow you to have two. Here’s the recipe in case you want to make some back in your apartment after the festivities. If you haven’t been to South House yet, you need to put this on your to-do list! They have live music, great food and drinks and an awesome downstairs rec room with pool tables, darts, shuffle board, vintage sofas and a bar. A perfect place to Celebrate Mardi Gras!
Zeppelin Hall and Biergarten will also be hosting a big party. On Friday and Saturday night there will be live music from Jane’s Rockin’ Country Band starting at 10 p.m. They’ll be serving a crawfish boil, shrimp and grits, gumbo, muffuletta sandwiches, po’ boys, and delicious beignets for dessert. The bar, which has a ton of beers on tap, will be serving Abita beers in honor of Mardi Gras.
HopsScotch will also be serving Shrimp Po Boy sliders and hurricane specials all day .
Make sure if you have a few Hurricanes you call a cab or have a friend who is a designated driver! Luckily, Madox is also in walking distance of most of the locations named above.
