Celebrating Chinese New Year around Madox

February 4, 2016

Chinese New Year is China’s most important traditional festival. It is also the most important Chinese celebration for families, relaxing, gift giving and an official public holiday around the world, even in NYC. Besides the typical Chinese take-out, there are a few fun ways you can celebrate the Lunar New Year with Madox as your home base.

Whether you’re traveling into New York City to celebrate, going out to eat or creating your own dishes at home, you’re guaranteed to have fun and enjoy good food and culture! This year the annual New Year Firecracker Ceremony and Cultural Festival will be held at 11am on February 8th, 2016.  The festival includes 600,000 firecrackers, dancers, singers and food vendors and will be held at Sara Roosevelt Park in New York City.  If you couldn’t skip work to attend the festival you can celebrate by going to the Chinatown Chinese New Year Parade: Lion and Dragon Performance which will be held Sunday, February 14th from 1-3:30 pm on Mott Street in Chinatown, NYC.

If crowds aren’t your thing you can enjoy one of many Chinese restaurants in Jersey City! Food King on Newark Ave is known for their boneless BBQ ribs, crispy shrimp, dumplings and they also have vegetarian options available.  Old Peking located at 746 Montgomery St is also a popular spot for shrimp dishes, dumplings and chicken with broccoli.   Hosting your own Chinese New Year party at the apartment is also a great idea! Party City has awesome decorations and we’ve listed some easy recipes you can prepare for your guests! You can also supply your guests with tools and material to do their own paper cutting designs or upside down “good fortune” signs.
