Celebrating National Coffee Day in Jersey City

September 29, 2018

Jersey City is home to many coffee shops, some which are right outside your Madox apartment! Celebrate National Coffee Day on September 29th by purchasing and indulging in your favorite cup of Joe.  According to an expert cupper (a professional coffee taster), there are four components of a perfect cup: aroma, body, acidity, and flavor. From the moment the average coffee lover opens a fresh bag of coffee beans, the aroma beckons, percolating the senses. Even those who don’t drink coffee tend to enjoy the fragrance of roasted beans.  Here are some of our favorite coffee shops around the Madox:

Sam a.m – They are a favorite in Jersey City because of their tasty brunch, fresh squeezed juices and their delicious coffee.  Celebrate National Coffee day this weekend by trying one of their vanilla lattes!

Caffe Bene – Before you hop on the PATH or the NY Waterway ferry, stop at Caffee Bene.  This shop has a cozy ambiance, serves sandwiches, pastries, gelato and their favorite item off the menu are the Belgium waffles with strawberries, chocolate and whipped cream. Pair your lunch or dessert with a flavorful cappuccino, frappuccino, latte or coffee.

Vogue Café – This French café has the best croissants in the neighborhood (in our opinion)! They are baked daily and they pair perfectly with a cappuccino or latte.

Enjoy a cup or two of your favorite coffee. Here is a Coffee Brewing Guide to help create your own in your Madox apartment.  Use #NationalCoffeeDay to post on social media.

Oktoberfest in Jersey City

September 26, 2018

Just a 15 minute walk or 10 minute ride via the Light Rail, which is right outside your Madox apartment, is Lutze Biergarten.  This Saturday, September 29th from 12PM-7PM, they are having an Oktoberfest! The weather is supposed to be beautiful and it’s the perfect way to celebrate the beginning of fall.

Oktoberfest is an autumn festival held in Munich, Germany, in late September and early October, which is known for their oversized mugs of beer.  Here in Jersey City, attendees can enjoy live music, authentic German food such as pretzels, bratwurst, schnitzels, a pig roast and much more.  Of course, they’ll be plenty of German beer to help wash down all the delicious food.  This event is family friendly and you can also bring your pup!

Lutze Biergarten is an outdoor waterfront venue which offers spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline. Guests can enjoy outdoor games, sit back in one of their many Adirondack chairs, enjoy their fire pits and sample different cuisines from one of their food vendors.

New York City will also have an Oktoberfest September 27th-30th and October 4th-7th from 12PM to 12AM. They’ll have stein holding contests and lots of people will be dressed in traditional Bavarian attire. The event is held on Pier 15 (78 South Street) and is under 25 minutes from your Madox apartment using the Paulus Hook ferry.

Brunch Spots in Jersey City

Now that it’s officially fall, Jersey City residents will be out and about enjoying pumpkin coffee or delicious fall cocktails on the weekends.  Whether you’re looking for outdoor seating or a new restaurant you haven’t tried before, you can’t go wrong with these two.  They both have great cocktails and delicious food!

Light Horse Tavern – This restaurant has been a favorite in Jersey City for many years.  If you have a sweet tooth, Light Horse Tavern is where it’s at! Their banana bread appetizer is a must at brunch and is a perfect appetizer for the table. They also have a strawberries and whip cream app which is simple but delicious!   Their brunch menu includes eggs benedict, scrambled eggs, sandwiches and burgers.  At brunch you can order off their raw bar menu which includes fresh oysters, Maine lobster tail, king crab legs, shrimp cocktail (one of our favorites in Jersey City) and clams.

Harry’s Daughter – People have been raving about Harry’s Daughter since it opened months ago.  It’s a “Caribbean Gastro Pub” and their brunch menu includes French toast with rum flambé bananas, waffles drizzled with Nutella, steak and eggs, a Pat La Frieda brunch burger, jerk chicken sandwich, fried chicken and waffles and plenty more.

This Saturday, September 22nd from 12PM-7PM, gather all your seafood loving friends and head to the Jersey City waterfront.  Guests will enjoy a variety of food from vendors at the Urby parking lot (200 Greene St) to raise environmental awareness.  Lutze Biergarten, across from the festival, will also be serving their delicious cocktails and seafood.  This establishment is the perfect place to go to on a beautiful fall day.

Lutze Biergarten – The Lutze is Jersey City’s outdoor waterfront venue, offering the community a haven for great food, drinks, music and games. The Lutze invites everyone to enjoy themselves – mingle with neighbors, visit old friends, make new friends – all while sharing the spectacular view of the New York City skyline. They will also have live music!

Some other vendors attending that we recommend checking out are:  Sipp Organics, Gringo’s, Puff’s Palate House, Chavas and Ralph’s Cheesecake for dessert. Also, make sure to also visit the 40′ oyster bar, after all, no seafood festival is complete without an oyster bar.

The event is family-friendly, so feel free to bring the kids! There will be kid-friendly activities such as face painting and a bouncy house. Guests can also enjoy music spun throughout the day by a DJ, oyster shucking, a bike giveaway and prizes.

New Dining in Jersey City

September 22, 2016

There’s a new tiki-bar in town! Cellar 335 is finally open and we are excited to try this restaurant/bar out.  They are directly below newly revitalized White Eagle Hall along with highly acclaimed Madame Bistro.  Before we get into how awesome this new performance venue is, we’ll talk about their food.  Chef Knott of Cellar 335 brings cool and contemporary dining to Jersey City.  He previously worked at the Saddle River Inn and BLT which are both spectacular restaurants.  They serve Progressive American cuisine with Asian accents and tiki-style cocktails.  The restaurant is also filled with hand painted murals by local Jersey City artists, hip boutique interior and features a wall with living plant life.  Some of their favorites off the menu are Korean style wings, prime skirt steak, tuna roll and the spicy beef noodle. Sunday champagne brunches are soon to come!

Madame Claude Bistro is a very well-known French restaurant in the city.  They own a French wine bar in Hamilton Park and also feature live music on Thursday evenings.  If you love savory crepes and escargot (one of the best we’ve had in a while) than you will want to make a reservation here ASAP! The staff is very friendly and the rustic ambiance is sure to please!

Above both these restaurant’s is the White Hall Eagle.  We heard that this venue looks great and Jersey City never disappoints with live music! They haven’t updated their upcoming events yet but when they do, you can count on us to give you the 411.

Jersey City Fashion Week

September 19, 2016

NY may have been getting all the attention this month, but Jersey City Fashion Week is finally here! It will spotlight some of the most imaginative and talented designers while also celebrating Jersey City’s vibrant social and culture scene.  Throughout the week there will be fashion shows, charity functions, cultural events, cocktail parties and networking receptions.

We’re lucky to live in a city which is an ideal host for fashion week.  We have eccentric bars, restaurants, pedestrian walkways and beautiful serene parks if you want to take a breather from the hustle and bustle.  You can purchase some tickets here for events such as the JCFW meet and greet at Port-O Lounge where you’ll get to meet models, designers and also receive drink specials.  This event is free! On September 22nd you can join the community at Maritime Park where you’ll meet and connect with international and couture designers.

We are really excited to see designers Michi and Noreen Francis hit the stage this year! Michele Walden, is owner designer of Michi and creates knitwear for women.  She uses carefully selected yarns that vary from silks to rayon, wool and linen to make it the perfect fit while being creative and stylish. Noreen Francis is a distinguished designer, stylist and humanitarian.  She raises money to fight global hunger and runs her own business out of “The Store” and donates a portion of her proceeds to MissonProject which is a Jersey City-based organization which Francis founded in 2011 to help orphans and disregarded children all over the world.

Don’t Miss the Bus for JC Day Trippers

September 16, 2016

There’s a funky bus in Jersey City that you can hop on and enjoy fun daytime activities during the weekends and some week days with your friends and family.  The JC Day Trippers mission is simple: provide convenient and affordable transport while initiating and facilitating a unique and unforgettable travel experience.

The name of the bus is “Maggie May” and she’s a hip whip of art on wheels! Inside the bus you’ll find original red leather seats and wood-panel siding.  The bus was painted by local Jersey City artist Norm Kirby.  It also comes equipped with A/C, free Wi-Fi, USB charging stations and a bike rack. Maggie May has space for 41 Day Trippers.

Enough about the bus, let’s talk day trips! There are still 2 day trips planned to Asbury Park on September 17th & 18th.  The weather has been fabulous and now is the best time to visit this beautiful beach.  Asbury Park is very similar to Jersey City because of its hip bar scene and eccentric dining options.  We promise you’ll have a good time here!

The Day Trippers will also have a “lakes and trails” calendar coming for the fall season which includes boating, hiking and possibly a dip in the water depending on the weather and how spontaneous you are.  They also posted on Instagram they will be taking a trip to Mountain Creek on September 24 for their annual Oktoberfest where you’ll find live music, great food and very large beers.

You can book the bus for private events and if you have any fun ideas for day trips feel free to contact them.

Where to Catch the Games in Jersey City

September 8, 2016

Football season is officially in effect! Whether you watch because you love the sport, enjoy the bar food, socializing, or because you’re a part of a fantasy league, you may need some ideas on where to watch the games in Jersey City.

HopsScotch– A German & Belgium inspired pub which has a great selection of craft beers, scotch and TVs making it a great spot for game day.  The burgers and macaroni & cheese are a must when visiting this spacious sports bar.  HopScotch has a lot of screens so patrons can choose to watch different games they have on.  They are known for their great food, service and ambiance.  It’s the perfect place for happy hour and football season.

Zeppelin Hall Biergarten-Not only can you rock out at this eatery but they have huge TV’s, German food and outdoor seating.  We highly recommend their huge German pretzels, ribs, chicken sausage, pierogis and chicken schnitzel.  It’s a great place to relax and enjoy the games.  The space is huge so it’s never overly packed.

O’Hara’s Sports Bar– This is a large pub which offers a large menu of beers, burgers, ribs and more.  If you love trivia, this is your spot! They also have 5 TV’s directly above the bar so your eyes can be glued to the screens without anyone getting in your way.  O’ Hara’s has an outdoor section which is enjoyable during the autumn months.  Some food options we suggest are the stuffed burgers with waffle fries, pizza balls, fried pickle spears and wings.

All About Downtown in Jersey City

September 7, 2016

The All About Downtown Street Fair is one of our favorite events in Jersey City.  It began in 2011 and featured over a hundred vendors selling all sorts of products ranging from handmade jewelry to one of a kind handmade art work.  The event also attracts top food trucks from all over the tristate so make sure to come hungry!

Some of our favorite vendors attending this year are Grandma Downtown, Geek Boy Press, Greeving Cards, Oh Honey and much more!

Grandma Downtown has the best bread in Jersey City! Whether you’re looking for gluten free, dairy free or just fantastic bread options, this woman has it all! She is at most events in Jersey City and is a crowd pleaser.  You can also bring her bread rolls home and freeze them for your next event.

Geek Boy Press is a newer company which makes printed promotional items such as magnets, sweatshirts and signs.  You can find them on Etsy, but if you need any pre-printed gear just visit their booth! Geek Boy Press is a well-trusted company and we can’t wait to see them at the fair.

Greeving Cards has already hit 15,000 followers on Instagram.  This is a booth you do not want to miss! It’s the perfect place to stock up on cards and apparel with funny memes and animals for the upcoming holidays.

Oh Honey has the best honey in the world (in our opinion).  Stop by and get a mini-jar of their delicious honey which makes a great gift for a friend or family member…. or yourself!

Fall in Love with Jersey City at The Madox

September 23, 2015

When you feel that first crisp breeze, you know fall is in the air. From warm apple cider to camping trips, there are so many reasons to enjoy fall. Here are some things about the season that will bring out the autumn lover in you.

A favorite fall activity is taking a drive up a tree-lined street or going on a nature hike. To see the canopy of red, gold, and orange leaves is so enchanting. While we are in the middle of a city, Jersey City has plenty of tree-lined streets that change color this time of year. Check out one of our local parks or travel a bit out of town to one of these New Jersey hiking destinations.

Along with the wonderful foliage, fall is a month full of delightful foods. As soon as September rolls around, your taste buds will salivate for all things pumpkin. From lattes to ales, pies to waffles, everything gets a delicious pumpkin makeover. You don’t want to miss these seasonal delights, the most popular of which you can find at our local Starbucks just a short walk away.

Speaking of ale, starting September 25th, with over 50 beers on tap, Oktoberfest will take place at Zeppelin Hall on 297 Grand Street in Jersey City. Along with beer, you can expect German food along with live music from German party bands and contests/giveaways.

Apple Picking Around Jersey City

September 15, 2015

Apple season is underway! New Jersey orchards are busy prepping for apple picking. Starting September 5th, Demarest Farms in Hillsdale, NJ will be open Monday through Friday, from 3 to 4:30PM, and Saturdays and Sundays from 10AM to 4:30PM for apple picking. Home to more than 14 varieties of pick-your-own apples, Demarest Farms’ admission cost is $5 per person, and that includes hayride, corn maze, and a visit with farm animals. It’s $9 for a bag to hold apples that you can pick.

Ripple Hill Farm in Basking Ridge, NJ is another great option not far from The Madox. On Sundays during September and October they’re open to the public for pick-your-own apples. Ripple Hill Farm grows many varieties of apples throughout the harvesting season. In early September you can pick Macintosh and Gala, while Granny Smith and Stayman Winesaps are available later in the season. You can come out every few weeks to try the different varieties, as each variety has it’s own unique taste and is better for different recipes.

Once you’ve got the apples in hand, there are so many options for delicious treats that you can cook in your beautiful Madox kitchen. For apple pies you want to choose crisp apples that won’t get mushy after being in the oven for an hour. Tart varieties are key since sugar and cinnamon are big components of most recipes. Granny Smiths are most common, but mixing tart and sweet varieties makes for the best flavor. Baked apples are by far the easiest apple recipe. Just core the apple and add cinnamon, sugar and a pat of butter, and stick it in the oven. Just use a variety that will hold its shape when cooked, such as Rome Beauty, Jonathan, or Empire. For more advice on delicious apple treats for fall, check out this local article.
