Best Outdoor Bars in Jersey City

August 28, 2018

The end of August is one of our favorite times to grab some drinks outside.  It’s not too hot, not too chilly and lucky for Madox residents there are some great spots for drinking al fresco.

Lutze Biergarden – The Lutze is Jersey City’s outdoor waterfront venue, offering the community a haven for great food, drinks, games, and an even better time. The Lutze invites everyone to enjoy themselves – mingle with neighbors, visit old friends, make new friends – all while sharing the spectacular view of the New York City skyline. They offer specialty cocktails, frozen cocktails, sangria, draft beer, wine and also serve authentic German food.

Hamilton Pork – This BBQ joint recently added a whole outdoor seating area with picnic tables and hanging lights.  They have delicious margaritas (our favorite is the Jalapeno and Cilantro), wine, bourbon & scotch drinks, beer and non-alcoholic beverages.  On Thursdays they have an all-night happy hour where you can get a traditional margarita for five dollars. Pair your drink with their traditional tacos, pulled pork or brisket…yum!

Porta – Porta has a huge rooftop dining area with two full bars.  It overlooks Pedestrian Ave, so you can sip on cocktails and people watch.  Is there anything better? Well, yes there is!  They also have delicious pizzas, pastas and salads…making it the perfect spot to be a regular at this September.

Jersey City Craft Distillery Fest

August 26, 2018

Jersey City Wine Fest is hosting a Craft Distillery Fest at Harborside Atrium which is just a short walk from your Madox apartment.  The festival will feature over 100 styles of spirits. Meet the distillers, master blenders, and other experts who will be in attendance. This is your chance to taste craft-distilled spirits from moonshine to mezcal. High end rum, cognac, whiskey, vodka, gin, tequila and more with majestic views of the city skyline.

Some spirits you can look forward to trying are:

Owls Brew – Owl’s Brew is a tea crafted for cocktails.  It was founded by tea-drinking boozers who were looking for a chaser that was lighter and fresher. They were bored of the go-to vodka cranberry and didn’t like that it was high in sugar and didn’t keep you hydrated. It didn’t take them long to think of a product that offered endless flavors, that was light and fresh – tea! You can order their products online or here is where you can find them.

Black Dirt Distillery – Black Dirt Distilling, LLC was formed in March, 2012. In order to meet the demand of the newly crafted and already renowned Black Dirt Bourbon and Black Dirt Apple Jack, born at the Warwick Valley Winery and Distillery, the construction of a 4,000 square foot distillery along with a 60-foot distillation column was completed in Pine Island, NY in 2013. Today, the facility produces upwards of 60 barrels of whiskey or apple jack every week.  Warwick Winery is just an hour away from your Madox apartment and the perfect place to spend a fall day while enjoying Black Dirt bourbon and wine.

There will also be live music at this event!

Celebrating National Waffle Day in Jersey City

August 23, 2018

If you’re a lover of breakfast foods, you know Jersey City has great spots for pancakes and waffles.  Madox residents can celebrate National Waffle day on August 24th at a few establishments known for this delicious sweet battered treat. In the words of comedian Amy Poehler, “We need to remember what’s important in life: friends, waffles, work. Or waffles, friends, work, it doesn’t matter. But work is third.”

Brownstone Diner & Pancake Factory – This restaurant has every type of waffle you could dream of! Whether you’re looking for something sweet like a Belgium waffle with strawberries or fried chicken and waffles, you’ll find it here!  We love diners because they serve waffles all day! They also have a full bar, so you enjoy some mimosas and bloody mary’s!

The Kitchen Step – They also offer a delicious fried chicken option over a buttery waffle.  Their chicken has a kick from their homemade honey-sriracha glaze but then they top it off with a grass-fed buttermilk gravy.  The Kitchen Step has a full bar with a fantastic brunch cocktail list.   One of our favorite drinks there is the Pina Colada.  It will pair perfectly with your waffle on beautiful Sunday.

Make sure to use #NationalWaffleDay when posting on social media.

La Festa Italiana in Jersey City

August 15, 2018

This year will be the 115th annual Jersey City La Festa Italiana and it runs until August 19th. This event began in 1902 as a street festival in honor of Our Lady of the Assumption & St. Rocco.  It continues to draw thousands of people from across the country as they make their annual trip back to their home parish. This has become one of the most anticipated yearly events in Historic Downtown Jersey City! If you love celebrating history with food, drinks and your community, you won’t want to miss this event.

At the festival you’ll find live entertainment, tasty alcoholic beverages, games and 50/50 raffles making it the perfect activity for a Friday or Saturday night.  White Star will be serving cocktails all evening and there will also be a booth which will serve peaches and wine, the authentic drink of the festival.

While there will be an array of delicious food such as authentic Polish and Italian food, our favorite vendor this year is:

Monteleone’s Bakery – This traditional bakery is known for their pies and Italian pastries such as eclairs, Napoleons and cannoli’s. Basically, if you have a sweet tooth, head directly to their booth.  People know Monteleone’s as being one of the best old school bakeries in Jersey City and some New Jersey and New York residents have been coming here for over twenty years!

New Restaurants in Jersey City

August 3, 2018

Two new eateries recently opened in Jersey City and you’ll definitely want to check them out.  One is a burger joint and the other serves classic Cuban dishes.  Both get two thumbs up from us!

Diesel and Duke – If you love burgers, than you’ll be happy to hear that Diesel and Duke just opened in Jersey City! This spot is famous for their eccentric menu and delicious hamburgers. If you love a simple burger, than The Standard will be up your alley (American cheese, lettuce, tomato, aioli and ketchup). More adventurous eaters may want to try the S.P.B.B which is a burger topped with Siracha, peanut butter and bacon.  They didn’t forget about the Vegetarians! Their falafel burger is delicious and served with lettuce, tomato, onion and their famous aioli.

Rumba Cubana – We are so excited that Rumba Cubana is opening it’s fourth location in Jersey City! This will be right across from another Jersey City favorite, GP’s Italian restaurant. Both locations are on Hamilton Park making it the perfect spot for dinner after catching some rays or playing tennis. Both Rumba Cubana and GP’s are laid back but offer outstanding food! That’s one of the many reasons people love Jersey City restaurants.   On Rumba Cubana’s menu you’ll find an array of Cuban dishes such as oxtail, empanadas, marinated chicken and fish dishes and much more. Don’t forget to add some classic Cuban sides to your order such as the tostones, fried sweet potato and black beans with rice.

BBQ Around Jersey City in September

August 26, 2016

The 7th annual Hamilton Park BBQ Festival is just a month away! Now is the time to mark your calendar since it can be hard to keep up with all the events going on in Jersey City this September.  In the past, this event featured BBQ at Legal Beans, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, Jimmy’s BBQ and we can only assume that this year Hamilton Pork will have their own tent serving delicious food and drinks.

Hamilton Pork offers Texas style BBQ plates, sandwiches, tacos, signature cocktails and great beer selections.  You can enjoy their rustic indoor atmosphere or grab a table outside.  The restaurant is also owned and operated by the same gentlemen that own The Hamilton Inn which is super successful and was even listed as one of the best brunch places in the country!

Legal Beans Café is also a great option for BBQ in Jersey City.  They are known for their juicy and tender brisket platter and sandwich.  You can enjoy their colossal platters in the sunny courtyard dining area with friends or have it delivered right to your door.  Make sure to try some of their tasty sides such as mac & cheese, mashed sweet potatoes, cornbread and baked beans.

Newport Liberty Half Marathon

August 22, 2016

It’s almost that time of the year! The Newport Liberty Half Marathon is one of the most anticipated events of the year.  With views of New York City, Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, Verrazano Bridge and the beautiful Manhattan skyline, there’s no wonder it’s one of the most popular half marathons in the country.  The USATF certified course takes you along the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway and across to Liberty State Park which has flat terrain.  Previous runners have expressed how organized and low key the event was compared to other marathons.

Plan for a post-race celebration at Newport Town Square with refreshments, local beer, live music and a drawing for cool prices.  Not only is it a fun marathon to be a part of but $3,000 in award money will be offered to winning runners in each category.  Proceeds from the race will also be donated to the Jersey City Medical Center.  All runners will also receive finisher medals and bragging rights for a year that they completed the run!

On the website you’ll see that headphones aren’t allowed but we found that most people do wear them. However, if you’re competing for 1st place the officials may be a little stricter once you cross the line.  The actual date for the run is September 18th so you still have time to register and quickly train.  Newport is just minutes from Manhattan via the PATH train and faces the Hudson River.  The community offers shopping, parks (Newport Green is our favorite), dining, bars and over five million square feet of office space to more than 20,000 professionals.

Fox & Crow in Jersey City

August 15, 2016

Fox & Crow is a pub and parlor In Jersey City Heights.  It’s very well-known throughout the city for their music, ambiance and great food.  They have a great music line-up for August and if you’re a craft beer lover, this will be your new spot…if it isn’t already.

Their specialties, food-wise, are hand cut pub fries, wings and burgers.  All the food is gastro-pub style and will not disappoint.  Two of our favorites are the “Old Blue”, a perfectly cooked burger (to your liking) with flavorful blue cheese and bacon marmalade and the “Krabby Patty”, a fresh crab patty, Asian slaw and fresh cilantro.  Every Tuesday Fox & Crow also has “Taco Tuesday” where they offer tuna, chicken and steak tacos all under $12.00

If you have a sweet tooth AND love craft beer, you’ll love their alcohol infused “desert menu” such as the root beer float (not your Father’s root beer, vanilla ice cream and whipped cream) and the chocolate stout float which is a rich chocolate beer, vanilla ice cream and whipped cream.

As far as music, below is the list of performers for the remainder of August:

  • Seth Walker (8/19/16) – this blues artist is so good he took up a residency in New Orleans.
  • Walter Parks & Bryan Beninghove (8/20/16) – Bryan started the Riverview Jazz Festival and Walter is a song writer, vocalist, guitarist and bassist who lives in Jersey City.  They make a great duo!
  • KJ Denhert (8/26/16) – she’s an urban folk and jazz artist with a whole lot of funk! KJ was named one of the best female vocalist in 2009 and has won 4 Independent Music Awards.
  • MurchChurch Organ Trio (8/27/16) – an organ trio is a group of 3 jazz musicians (organ, drummer and jazz guitarist).  You don’t want to miss this performance.

Liberty Science Center “After Dark” Parties

August 8, 2016

As some of you may have heard, Chicpeajc has been named the ambassador for Liberty Science Center After Dark.  Every third Thursday of the month there will be a 21 + party and each month they’ll have new DJ’s, music and a different theme. And of course, it wouldn’t be a party at Liberty Science Center without a laser show! This is definitely one of the highlights of the event and the first laser show is one you don’t want to miss! Chicpeajc also promises some surprises but hasn’t given anything away yet….

LSC After Dark is a great way for adults to be carefree for a couple hours and enjoy “play time” with their friends and family.  Party goers can move from one exhibit to another such as the touch tunnel, infinity climber, rock wall and more.

The first event will be held on August 18th from 6-10pm and the theme is “Dancing with Drones” where you’ll get to experience real drones flying above as you dance to DJ Stadium Status (often at Transmission, Dull Boy and Porta) and HayOner will be the MC for the evening.  There will also be a drone race in the atrium and obviously there will be “dronie” photos taken all night.  As we mentioned before, the laser show for this event is going to be awesome! Are you ready? It’s an all Prince tribute in the massive IMAX Dome Theater.  Wear your favorite purple attire and get ready to dance to some of his classic hits such as “1999” and “Kiss”.

Jazz for Lunch in Jersey City

August 1, 2016

Jersey City never falls short of live music performances.  We still have two more months of the Jazz for Lunch free concert series which runs through September.  It takes place from 12-2pm every Thursday at J. Owen Grundy Pier on the Hudson River which has a beautiful pavilion, picnic tables and of course spectacular views of New York City.  Below are the four performers for the month of August.

Richard Reiter Jazz Quartet – Richard Reiter is a musician, band leader and EMMY Award winning composer.  Sit back and relax as you enjoy some smooth jazz.

The Funky Organics – These guys are awesome! They’re a Soul Jazz, Blues and Funk band playing soulful music which was inspired by the 60’s. The band consists of a 2 horn front line, backed by organ, guitar and drums.  They are all regulars on the New York club and recording scene.

Bryan Beninghove – Bryan is a part of the Jersey City band Manouche Bag which has been performing for six years every Thursday at Madame Claude Café (now Bistro) in Jersey City.  They also play many weddings and private parties all over the county.  Bryan is also the President and director of RiverviewJazz.org.  This guy knows his stuff!

Wilma Ann and the Jazz Disciples – Jazz music lovers unite! You’ll love Wilma Ann’s voice and the sounds of the piano, saxophone and drums. You may have seen them at local Jersey City venues such as Port-O Lounge.
