Project EATS Returns to Jersey City

Project: EATS returns to City Hall June 23rd and 24th in Downtown Jersey City for its third year with more than 50 vendors each day. This outdoor foodie festival will have an array of food trucks and tented vendors as well as four beverage bars.

The Jersey City Project, a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit, continues its mission of promoting and supporting artisans and locally-owned small businesses.  They have an excellent track record of executing projects which are specifically artisan-driven marketplaces.  Their slogan is “bringing out the best in Jersey City, one project at a time”, and that is exactly what they do!  Each vendor represents a variety of industries, including retail, craft, fine art, jewelry, food, beer, and more.

Some of our favorite vendors this year are:

Pick a Bonbon– These homemade, handmade, Brazilian inspired bonbons have been a huge hit at Jersey City markets.  All of their Amegrideiros are around 100 calories! They have delicious flavors such as s’mores, coconut, peanut butter, French toast, coffee and much more!

Angry Archies – In 2016, Archie’s won Best Food at the Food Truck Mash up at the Meadowlands, which featured hundreds of trucks competing for NJ bragging rights. If you enjoy fresh crab, we suggest ordering the Angry Lobster Roll, Angry Crab Roll or their infamous crab fries.  They also have delicious refreshing lemonade. Jersey City residents can find Angry Archies pop up location at 200 Harborside, which is now opened for lunch from 11:30-2:30.

You can follow The Jersey City Project on Instagram for the latest updates on Project: EATS, what vendors to anticipate at the event, and what’s going on around town this summer.

Celebrating National Cheese Day in Jersey City

June 3, 2018

On June 4, we honor one of the most delicious contributions to our food and hearts. If you’re a cheese lover, then you know this snack makes everything better. With thousands of varieties, you can get adventurous this National Cheese Day by checking out one of our favorite cheese shops in Jersey City.

Excellent as a snack on its own, cheese is also a perfect ingredient in pasta, soups, sandwiches and so much more. There’s nothing better than a crispy, flaky, grilled cheese sandwich (with tomato…in our opinion), nachos with cheese, French onion soup, wine and cheese pairings, cheesecake and of course, pizza! Jersey City has an abundance of places where you can indulge in these meals or you can make them at home in your Madox apartment. Van Hook Cheese and Grocery is the perfect spot to pick up an assortment of cheeses that are sure to impress you and your guests!

Van Hook is a family-owned cheese and specialty store that focuses on high quality and local products.  They offer cheese platters (for pick-up only), local events, expert advice on cheeses and they recently added a grilled cheese menu to the store.  These aren’t your typical grilled cheese sandwiches, they use only the finest cheddar cheese and you can add fig jam, bacon jam, ham or duck.  Their local events are held at Jersey Wine & Spirits and the next event is on June 26th which is a rose and cheese pairing.

You can visit their event page for more upcoming wine tastings. Make sure to join their mailing list as well!

Make sure to use #NationalCheeseDay while posting on social media!

Summer on Newark Ave in Jersey City

June 24, 2016

Jersey City’s Newark Avenue perfectly captures the essence of our city and the spirit of summer.  People are always outside dining and having a great time and the sunset hits the strip just perfectly.  No matter what time of the day or week, people are always out and about enjoying the outside dining and round tables set up for pedestrians. The street is closed off for cars and they even painted a huge Jersey City-themed Monopoly board on the street which adds color and has been attracting a lot of attention.

Whether you like Italian, traditionally American, Thai, Portuguese, Spanish tapas or Southern comfort, this avenue has it all! People from New York City are even taking the commute to Jersey City to experience what we have to offer.  Some of our favorites on Newark Ave are South House, Skinners Loft and Ravel.

South House is a favorite during the summer.  With their outdoor dining, live music and lounge area downstairs which includes shuffle board and pool, it’s a crowd pleaser.  It’s the perfect ambiance for a Thursday night happy hour or weekend fun.

Ravel is a traditional Spanish tapas bar and their chefs spent a few months in Barcelona studying their culture and food so you know it’s legit! They have a great happy hour Tuesday-Sunday 5-10pm where they serve $5.00 drinks.  We’ve been there, and have to say, the pours are pretty big too! Try their mushroom croquettes! Trust us.

Skinners Loft has a great brunch menu and they serve a complimentary basket filled with homemade biscuits and muffins.  These pastries are guaranteed to bring you back every weekend!

First Day of Summer in Jersey City

June 20, 2016

June 20th marks the first day of summer. It’s also the summer solstice and there’s many ways to celebrate the longest day of the year in Jersey City.

In Sweden, it’s tradition to eat your way through the entire day of the summer solstice. This sounds like one tradition that won’t be a problem as a Jersey City resident.  Maybe some of you even took the day off!  We recommend heading over to the Grove Street farmers market and picking up some fresh fish, veggies and potatoes. They also have a great selection on organic chicken and beef.  A lot of their meats come pre-seasoned or stuffed which makes it easier for you after work.  They do all the hard work and you simply bake or pan sear.

Another idea is to stop at the farmers market with a picnic basket/cooler and head to one of Jersey City’s parks.  Liberty State Park and Newport Green Park are our two favorites.  Liberty State Park has over 20 grills and a large picnic area.  The park offers views of the Statue of Liberty and New York City skyline.  It stays open until 10 so don’t forget to pack a dessert! Newport Green Park is right on the Hudson River and actually has its own beach area. There’s Adirondack chairs set up with umbrellas and you’re allowed to bring food.  If you’re into photography, we suggest bringing your cameras as the area is beautifully landscaped.

Jersey City: Project Eats

June 13, 2016

Calling all foodies! It’s that time of the year again. Project Eats will be back for its third summer in downtown Jersey City. Make sure to mark it in your calendar and tell your friends.  This is one event you won’t want to miss.

The Jersey City Project slogan is “bringing out the best in Jersey City, one project at a time”.  This event clearly represents that motto.   It’s the best of the best from Jersey City and each vendor represents a variety of industries including retail, craft, fine art, jewelry, food, beer & wine and more.  The Jersey City Project has always been proud and reassuring that there’s something for everyone at their events.

Some of our favorite vendors include the Hamilton Inn, Another Man’s Treasure and Taproot Organic.  Did we mention there will also be over 30 food vendors each day?

The Hamilton Inn is a rustic restaurant located in Hamilton Park.  They have an awesome brunch, lunch and dinner menu and make some of the best cocktails in town.  They’ll be serving delicious cocktails all weekend at their booth.  The owners also recently opened up Hamilton Pork which has already become a neighborhood favorite.

Another Man’s Treasure is known to have some of the best vintage clothing in Jersey City.  If you’re looking for some unique finds, make sure to check out their table.

Taproot Organics uses real food to make signature products such as mud masks, soap, shampoo, shave bars, beard balm, deodorants and joint therapy.  They even make a vegan bug repellent that is created from essential oils that repel mosquitoes; something we could all use this summer!

French Bistro in Jersey City

June 6, 2016

Alice Troletto and her husband, Mattias Gustafsson own the best French restaurant in Jersey City.  Madame Claude’s serves classic dishes and signature French cocktails.  They have been reviewed by prestigious papers and food bloggers in the tri-state such as the New York Times, Star Ledger and Jersey Journal.

Recently Madame Claude’s moved from a small location, where they were BYOB, to a larger space at 390 4th Street.   Their new spot is charming, rustic, has beautiful décor and much more seating.  The menu is mostly the same and features favorites such as escargot, steak frites and delicious crepes.  Our favorite is the spicy lamb sausage, mushroom and cream fraiche crepe.  There is also a rumor that an oyster bar is in the works! Mattias is in a jazz band called Manouche Bag and they play live “gypsy jazz” every Thursday night at the restaurant.  Once again they’ll have a lovely outdoor dining area with hanging lights, a cute garden area and great music.

Alice and Mattias also own Madame Claude’s Wine which is a French wine shop in Jersey City.  Sometimes when you walk in you’ll be greeted with live music and complimentary cocktails or wine tastings. It’s the perfect spot to stop at if you’re heading to a party or holiday get-together because they have gift bags and will wrap your bottle nicely. They even have wines labeled for certain occasions so you don’t have to search the store for the perfect champagne for New Year’s Eve or summer crawfish boil.
