The Ashford – Although they haven’t opened yet, The Ashford is giving us a sneak peak on their menu, event space and rooftop bar on their website. Their weekly events include everything from Taco Tuesdays, weekend brunch ($2.00 mimosas & $5.00 margaritas until 6pm), slider Fridays ($2.00 sliders 4pm-7pm), happy hour (Monday – Friday 4pm-7pm) and wing Monday’s (1/2 price wings and $12.00 select pitchers).  The Ashford will also have the largest rooftop bar in Jersey City and a beautiful space for private events. We can’t wait to check them out!

Crepe Guru – These crepes are made from scratch and include everything from Nutella and fruit to cheese and savory meats. Their menu isn’t officially done yet but you can check out their online dessert menu which includes favorites such as the Nutty Caramel Apple (warm apple pie filing cooked with cinnamon and topped with crushed walnuts, caramel, and vanilla ice cream), The Brownie Crepe (melted marshmallows topped with chocolate chip brownie, covered in Nutella chocolate and vanilla ice cream) and the New York Cheesecake (New York cheesecake cooked inside a crepe and topped with strawberries and MORE Nutella). Don’t Miss This Memorial Day Parade Near Your Madox Apartment

May 26, 2017

Memorial Day is finally almost here on May 29 – the day that we will celebrate those who have served for our military by foregoing our workdays to attend parades, see friends and family and enjoy the great weather that the spring season has finally brought to us.

At our Madox apartments, we are lucky to be surrounded by tons of exciting Memorial Day celebrations that will get you outside with some great summer foods and drink and also give you the chance to honor those who have served for us through parades throughout the region. However, there is one big parade in the area that is definitely a can’t-miss!

The Hoboken 119th annual Memorial Day Parade, which is the oldest continuous parade in New Jersey, will assemble near City Hall (1st Street and Washington Street) and proceed north on Washington Street to the reviewing stand on 10th Street and Washington Street in front of the Hoboken Elks Lodge.

Before the parade, there will be an interfaith memorial service at Community Church of Hoboken located at 600 Garden Street, Hoboken which is about two and a half miles from your Madox apartment and after the parade, there will be a Hudson County Memorial Day service at Holy Name Cemetery of Jersey City at 823 West Side Avenue, which is also about two and a half miles from your Madox apartment.

This parade, which will be filled with marching bands, school and community groups, the grand marshal and company and more, is a can’t-miss local activity so make sure that you make your way there on Memorial Day!

Head to Pier 13 in Hoboken This Spring

May 19, 2017

With the air finally warmer, Hoboken and Jersey City residents are finally ready to head to their favorite local hotspot – Pier 13, a family friendly beer garden that offers a variety of food, drinks, and activities, located at 1301 Sinatra Drive North, Hoboken, which is about three and a half miles from your Madox apartment.

Pier 13 prides itself on being the ‘city’s backyard’ and it serves as the communal gathering spot for food, drinks, social events such as movie nights and live music, sightseeing and activities on the water.

When it comes to getting something to eat with a twist, Pier 13 is a great destination since they host various new food trucks everyday such as Amanda’s Bananas, Pizza Vita, Empanada Guy, Luke’s Lobster and more. Plus, a huge array of beverages are served on the pier such as craft beer, frozen cocktails, homemade punch, sangria and other daily specials.

Once summer is here, Pier 13 becomes even more popular since they host various activities on the water such as stand-up paddle boarding tours and classes, where participants will get to see The Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Liberty State Park and more. These classes also make for a great workout!

Kayaking tours are also offered from Pier 13, in which no previous experience kayaking is required. Since the tours tend to fill up quickly because they make for a fun yet relaxing daytime activity, make sure you make your reservation in advance!

Visit These Local Paint and Sip Studios for Mother’s Day

May 11, 2017

When Mother’s Day comes around on May 14, most loyal sons and daughters will happily take their beloved mother to brunch or out to dinner. However, thanks to the new paint-and-sip studio sensation that has been all the rage lately, there’s now something much more fun that you can do with your mom this Mother’s Day – take her to a paint and sip studio, where you and her can craft your own paintings while enjoying a nice bottle of wine or beer.

Here in Jersey City, there are tons of paint and sip studios on every corner that would be the perfect destination for you and your mother this May 14. Read on to find out which one would be best for you!

Cork and Canvas, a paint and sip studio located at 275 Newark Avenue, Jersey City which is about a mile and a half from your Madox apartment, is the city’s newest paint and sip studio where talented artists will instruct you step-by-step how to paint the ‘painting of the evening’ while you enjoy drinks.

There’s no experience necessary to paint at Cork and Canvas, and tons of seasonal paintings as well as daily events are available, so make sure you check out their calendar to see what’s going on!

Blackbird Gallery and Art Studio, located at 189 Brunswick St, Jersey City which is about a mile and a half from your Madox apartment, has a unique way to manage their paint and sip classes – they don’t show you the end result of what your painting is supposed to look like, so every painting will be completely different and unique to you!

Currently, the studio is hosting a special where any paint and sip ticket, which includes all painting materials and instruction, cost only $30 per person so if you are interested in booking a spot for Mother’s Day, now is the time to do it!

Summer Towns Near Madox

May 31, 2016

Summer is almost here! New Jersey has beautiful towns and beaches and they’re not too far from the Madox apartment building.

With its small town charm, laid back atmosphere, cute restaurants and beautiful beaches, Stone Harbor offers a fun time for you and your friends and family.  The beaches tend to be a less crowded than most of the Jersey shore and are walking distance to all points of town.  If you love shopping check out 96th street where you’ll find cute boutiques.  For food, stop by Peace A Pizza, which serves chicken parm pizza, macaroni and cheese pizza and of course, amazing plain slices as well. End the evening at Springers Homemade Ice Cream Shop which has been open since 1920.

Belmar is another great NJ town to go if you’re looking for nightlife, a beautiful beach and great food.  Tenth street is home to Avenue Burrito and has some of the best Mexican food in central New Jersey.  If you’re looking for a BYOB restaurant, Ragin’ Cajun is a great option. For vegans, Kaya’s Kitchen, which is in the center of town offers vegan and vegetarian options.  Pier 9 is the best bet if you want live music, great drinks and beautiful views of the bay. Also, Bar A is a great brunch spot and offers cheap drinks, volleyball courts and outdoor tiki bars.

Memorial Day in Jersey City

May 25, 2016

If you’re spending Memorial Day Weekend in Jersey City, there’s plenty to do! We put together a list of activities for the long weekend the are a great way to kick off summer. Hopefully you will get to explore parts of Jersey City you never have before.

Friday, May 27th you can purchase tickets to set sail on a MDW midnight cruise on the Hudson.  This party boat has three floors, food, drinks, world-known DJ’s and indoor and outdoor space.  What a wonderful way to start off the weekend. We wouldn’t be surprised if there was a Memorial Day firework show as well!

Did you know that Jersey City has their own beach? Newport Green is a great spot to spend the afternoon.  The 4 acre park includes a sandy beach with umbrellas and chairs, open land for sports and a spectacular view of the New York City skyline.

Surf City will be opening their doors on May 13th.  We have been waiting for them to re-open since the temperature started going up and restaurants were setting up their outdoor tables again.  This is a neighborhood favorite and also offers beach chairs, umbrellas and sand! They have five bars and one is designated just for tropical drinks.  How good does a Pina colada sound with your feet in the sand and breathtaking views of the city?

William Wall Clubhouse is a floating bar on the Hudson River.  Most people think its members only; but the secret is out…it’s open to the public! Lucky for us, the only way to the boat is the Admiral’s Launch, a United States Coast Guard certified vintage motorboat from Liberty Harbor Marina, right here in Jersey City. The boat fits 40 comfortably and is $18.00 round trip and is not too far from Madox!

Riverview Jazzfest of Jersey City

While jazz music not be for everyone, the week long festival is still a fun welcome to summer with food and drinks. Located right on the border of Hoboken, above the city, this parks offers great views of the surrounding cities.

Jersey City Farmers’ Markets in May

May 19, 2016

6th Borough Market is a fun, family oriented weekend market in Jersey City. Located right by the Exchange Place path station, this event is a crowd pleaser! We went to the farmer’s market this weekend and enjoyed all the vendors and food trucks present. The 6th Borough Market is the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month.  You’ll find food trucks, handmade vintage jewelry, antique cameras and photos, handmade lotions and soaps, delicious gluten free and non GMO treats and music! The Chopping Block truck was there this weekend offering specials such as jerk chicken and rice, lasagna hotdog (sounds weird but looked delicious!), chicken quesadillas and specialty drinks.  If you’re vegetarian this may not be the truck for you, but 6th Borough Market has food for everyone.  But-A-Cake was also there and was delicious as well!  They also take online orders, Facebook message them for more information! Did we mention this market is just a ten minute walk from our apartment building?

Groove on Grove is probably our favorite farmer’s market in Jersey City.  Mostly because of the live music and awesome vendors.  If you work in the city you may want to get off at Grove Street every Wednesday. JC Fish Stand has beautiful, fresh fish right from Fulton Fish Market.  The scallops are out of this world! $30/per lb and can feed about 3-4 people.  You’ll also find booths with fresh flowers, cheeses and vintage clothing such as Mint Market and Kanibal & Co.

Cinco de Mayo in Jersey City

May 4, 2016

When you think about the start of May, Cinco de Mayo probably pops into your head.  Jersey City has a lot of fun activities (most involve margaritas and food!) that you can be a part of.  Whether you’re looking for a bar crawl, authentic Mexican cuisine or you’d prefer to stay at home and make your own margaritas and tacos in your Madox apartment, we have you covered!

Head to PJ Ryan’s on Thursday May 5th to pick up your pubcrawls.com wristband and map to enjoy all the perks of joining a pub-crawl.  You’ll get discounts on alcohol and be able to sample food from restaurants you have never been to in Jersey City.

If you had a long day at work and feel like enjoy a relaxing meal out then you can check out Taqueria Viva Mexico Kitchen Café which is directly outside of our building.  This cute café is known for their authentic Mexican cuisine.  Some favorite dishes include: grilled Cajun shrimp chilaquiles, chipotle chicken burrito, chicken sopes, steak quesadillas. For our resident vegetarians, they offer veggie enchiladas and quesadillas.   This establishment is also BYOB and does online delivery through Seamless.

Those are two great options for the evening, however, staying at your apartment in comfy clothes with some friends and a home cooked meal sounds amazing too! We have two great recipes if you choose to stay in your apartment.  This chicken and cheese quesadilla sounds absolutely delicious! It’s nice and easy and takes under an hour to prepare.  This recipe makes up to 8 servings so make sure to share! Last but not least, the margarita. These 10 margarita recipes use less sugar and are easy to make!
