Craft Beer Lovers, Unite in Jersey City

December 31, 2016

It might be getting a little colder, but that won’t stop beer lovers from enjoying their favorite alcoholic beverage.  Lucky for you, Departed Soles Brewing Co. is located right in Jersey City.

Departed Soles opened its doors in the Powerhouse Arts District in Jersey City in the summer of 2015.  They are known to have great craft beer and pride themselves on being New Jersey’s first craft brewery offering craft beer with 100% gluten free ingredients.  Their owner studied intensive brewing science and engineering-brewery so he knows what he’s doing.  He believes that beer is “an integral part of American culture, whether it is drinking at BBQ’s, beer pong in college, or tailgating before a game or concert”.

Some of their favorite beers (which aren’t gluten free!) are The Nuggy Monster (a touch of Rye for sweetness, oats for body, plus a hardy hand of nugget hops), Deuces (rich fruity flavor plus a well-balanced bitterness) and their seasonal gluten-free pumpkin beer.

Word on the street is Departed Soles is also dog friendly! The next time you’re taking your pet for a long walk and wishing you could also meet up with your friends for a beer, make sure to check this place out! If you’re looking to spend your New Year’s Eve at Departed Soles, they’ll be open from 2-9pm and open on New Year’s Day from 2-7pm.

You can also pick up beers to-go from Departed Soles if you’d rather enjoy the them in your apartment at The Madox.

Party David Bowie Style in Jersey City

David Bowie fans will want to mark their calendars for the 3rd annual Bowie Birthday Bash at LITM.  This year it will also be a tribute to the first anniversary of his passing.  David Bowie has touched many of our lives with his music and art, and Jersey City has celebrated the famous artist after his death with street art and concerts. Gather your friends and head to one of Jersey City’s favorite bars on January 8th, 2017 for the latest tribute to the deceased rock star.

Attendees will enjoy a live concert at 7pm featuring Bowie tribute band Heroes, a five-piece band from New York City.  Following the performance, they’ll be serving Bowie themed cocktails all night.  You can even have your face painted and pictures taken if you want to post some groovy pictures on social media.  Make sure to wear comfortable shoes because this will turn into a dance party!

LITM is Jersey City’s destination for seasonal cocktails, food, and local art and film.  They have monthly art shows along with film screenings and have had over 100 exhibits.  Every day of the week they have specials such as half-priced wings, happy hour (Mon-Fri), taco Tuesday’s, trivia night and more.  Some of their signature cocktails include basil lemonade, ginger sidecar (a zesty twist on the classic sidecar) and sailor’s dark and stormy (Sailor Jerry rum and ginger beer).  Tasty food options you can indulge in are mac & cheese, steamed mussels, fish tacos and their classic burger.

LITM first opened in 2003 and has received awards such as “Best Casual Restaurant”.  Located right on Newark Ave (Pedestrian Mall), it’s the perfect spot to enjoy food and drinks with the community.  They also have outdoor seating available during the warmer months.

Party of the Century at Taphaus on NYE

December 27, 2016

Looking for a unique and classy event for New Year’s Eve? Taphaus is going to host one of the best parties in North Jersey.  The event is inspired by Truman Capote’s 1966 ‘Party of The Century’.

In 1966, Truman Capote hosted a party for over 500 people at the Grand Ballroom of New York’s Plaza Hotel for the “Black and White Ball”. The guest list included a mix of artists and socialites such as Frank Sinatra, Andy Warhol and Gloria Vanderbilt. It was indeed the party of the century and still talked about today.

For the Jersey City version at Taphaus, tickets are $150.00 and that includes premium open bar from 9-11PM, passed hors d’ oeuvres, unlimited champagne, the best view of Manhattan that Jersey City has to offer and fireworks over the Hudson River.  Some of the past appetizers you can look forward to are shrimp cocktail, lobster rolls, short rib sliders, steak skewers with veggies, crudités and bruschetta.

Taphaus is a unique atmosphere with an extensive 48 tap system featuring some of the best beers in the world.  They have a vast array of innovative food created by celebrity chef Chris Nirschel.  It has a capacity to seat 200 people as well as an amazing outdoor space that seats an additional 100.  Some of their popular menu items include the Haus burger, grilled avocado salad, grilled Bavarian pretzel and gorgonzola bacon burger.

There will also be a photo booth at the event so you’ll have plenty of opotunity to get some souvenirs! Don’t forget to use #partyofthecentury and #NYEJC as your hashtags on December 31st  if you’re sharing on social media.

Festive Fun Around Jersey City this December

December 1, 2016

You’ve probably noticed that Jersey City is looking very festive! The Christmas Tree and Menorah are both up on Newark Ave (Pedestrian Mall) and the official lighting will be on Thursday, December 8th.  They’ll have live music by Matty Dee, free treats from Choc O’ Pain and Cookies N’ Crepes and of course Santa will be there! If you can’t make the tree lighting we’ve listed some restaurants that are really decked out this year and sure to put you in the holiday spirit.

South House is probably the most festive restaurant in Jersey City right now.  It’s located right on Newark Ave and looks amazing! They always do a great job decorating for every season.  This restaurant and bar brings “simple southern” to Jersey City by fusing Austin, Texas flavors and the soul of the South.  Their specialty cocktails are farm to glass and they have weekly and monthly live music from some of the best blues bands in the country.  The Rec Room is the perfect space to rent out for a holiday party since it has a full bar, shuffle board and pool tables.  You can enjoy this room any night of the week since it’s open to patrons as well. On December 17th, they’ll be hosting a Bad Santa party which you won’t want to miss.

If you’re in the mood for a rustic and cozy atmosphere, The Hamilton Inn is the place for you! They have beautiful wreaths and lights throughout the restaurant and on the trees outside which gives it a very inviting feel.  It’s hard passing this neighborhood favorite and not stopping in for a drink or bite.  You’ll find weekly specials such as the Lobster Shindig on Tuesdays, half-priced cocktail on Wednesdays, endless happy hour on Thursdays and weekend brunch!

For more festive fun, The Garden Center in Jersey City will also be having free photos with Santa and free cookies and hot cocoa on December 11th.

Mana Contemporary in Jersey City

December 30, 2015

You don’t need to go into New York City to get your fix of fine art. Mana Contemporary, located at 888 Newark Ave, offers tours of fascinating exhibits, local art, poetry readings and wine tastings hosted by some of the best wine experts in the country. Mana Contemporary was a former tobacco warehouse which now provides the perfect space for storing art, wine and exhibit space. It was founded in 2011 and remains one of the most innovative contemporary art organizations in the United States! They also have locations in Chicago and Miami if you ever want to take a trip .

A popular exhibit is Gary Lichtenstein’s who has had a successful 40 year career in the art world. You can find his work at some of the most prestigious art museums in the country and fortunately for Mana, they got a hold of his limited editions prints. You can find his work on the 2nd floor.

Right now Mana Art is focusing on the “Mana Urban Arts Project”. All around Jersey City you’ll find creative street art on walls that were once bare brick. It’s getting a ton of attention around the Jersey City and really brings the community together.

Mana wine is new to Mana Contemporary. This year they launched their program offering public and private events such as dinners, wine tastings, seminars and classes. Their main focus is to enjoy great tasting wines with friends, strangers and colleagues in a “one of a kind setting”.

For more information on the studios and wine tastings, visit http://www.manacontemporary.com/exhibitions-events/

Holiday Eats Around Jersey City

Tis the season! If you’re staying in Jersey City this Christmas and need some ideas for lunch or dinner, we have you covered!

Greene Hook will be serving food until 9pm Christmas Eve but will stay open until 11. Come in and try their lamb shank pot pie, enjoy a couple drinks and shuffle board. It doesn’t look like it will be too cold out so you can walk back to the Madox! For more information on the restaurant, you can visit their website.

Sam A.M will also be open Christmas Eve and is beautifully decorated for the holiday season. For reservations and questions about their Christmas Eve menu you can call 201-432-2233.

If you’d like to go somewhere a bit more fancy, try Vu Restaurant which is located in the Hyatt in Jersey City right on the water. Vu offers dishes such as halibut, beef tenderloin, crispy pork belly and they also have vegetarian options. The views are spectacular and they will be open on Christmas day as well.

One of our favorite neighborhood restaurants, Light Horse Tavern, will be open serving their full menu until 10pm.

Of course, if you really want to get into the holiday spirit you could hop on the PATH and take a trip to Rockefeller Center! There you will find ice skating, the famous Christmas tree, dining options and shopping! Another favorite place to visit during this time of year is Serendipity 3.

We hope that you have a happy and healthy Christmas this year!

Holiday Hosting at The Madox

December 16, 2015

Hosting holidays in your apartment at The Madox this December? Whether it’s a fun night with friends or a long night with in-laws, here are some holiday food and drink recipes sure to keep you and your guests toasty!

Not everyone has a home bar ready to go and buying a bunch of bottles can be a hassle. Making a signature drink is something that your friends and family will appreciate and easier for you. It’s also a good idea to make a batch that has no alcohol in it as well, whether it be for kids who come over or friends who have to drive home later.

Most likely your guests will ask if there’s anything they can bring to the gathering. Planning the menu is your right of passage as the host, but if you’re feeling overwhelmed you can designate specific desserts or appetizers to people.  Here’s a list of easy holiday appetizers which look and sound delicious!

Last but not least, if you’re worried about entertaining your guests check out this article for entertaining party games. These options are not as rowdy or sticky as beer pong but not as quite dull as a Bingo Night. The perfect compliment for your chic affair. 😉

Happy Holidays from The Madox!
