November 28, 2016

The Jersey City Project will be celebrating their 4th Project: Market on December 3rd and 4th.  This will be a heated outdoor market located in historic downtown Jersey City.  Come join other residents as they kick off the holiday shopping season! Attendees will find local hand-made gifts, DJ’s, food, and drinks. The market also helps to encourage economic growth throughout the community.  Some vendors you’ll find at the event are below.  We can’t wait!

MilkSugarLove – A well-known ice-cream spot in Jersey City which churns delicious ice cream from organic milk and cream and uses the best produce in New Jersey.  At the market they’ll be serving some of their favorite winter flavors which include: S’mores, chocolate peppermint, late night pie, Christmas cake and pumpkin cheesecake.  They will also have their taste French macaroons available.

The Lucky Honey Bee– This company specializes in scented soy candles, beeswax candles, lip balms and custom wedding favors.  They are eco-friendly and hand-crafted.  Most candles are also in recycled glass apothecary jars.  LHB uses domestically grown wax from soybeans and beeswax sourced locally from New York State.  You can also find them in select shops in New Jersey.

Turnstyle Art– An elementary art teacher and upcycle artist in the area who has become a favorite at the markets.  Her work is very eccentric and unique just like Jersey City. She will be selling custom Jersey City ornaments along with other fun stuff on Saturday, December 3rd.  She specializes in etched glass pieces and was even featured on HGTV.com.

Unique Holiday Shopping in Jersey City

November 25, 2016

With the holidays approaching, you may be wondering where you can get some unique and thoughtful gifts for your friends and loved ones.  Lucky for you, Jersey City has some awesome shops! Whether you’re looking for handmade candles, clothes, records, coffee mugs, chocolates or a gift certificate…this city has it all!

Kanibal & Co. – Kanibal & Co. is a lifestyle store located in downtown Jersey City, which is comprised of refurbished vintage furniture, funky home décor, apparel and gift items.  They opened in 2009 under Kanibal & Home but in recent years they have collaborated with local talent hence the name change.  There is something for everyone at this store and they even do classes and workshops. This November they will have 2 classes taught by local artists.  On November 3rd, you can join TurnstyleART for an evening of glass etching and hip hop.  Each participant will etch two rap-themed ornaments (which could be a cute gift as well). On November 9th, you can join their plant workshop where you’ll learn the art of making Kokedama.

Another Man’s Treasure – One of our favorite thrift stores in the area! The store was established in 2006 and has been included in both USA Today and Elle.com as the best places to shop vintage in America.  Refinery 29 even listed them as one of the 25 reasons to move to New Jersey! Our apartment complex is just minutes away from this gem and you can pick up some great gifts for the holidays.

L’atelier Du Chocolate – This place serves the best gourmet chocolates in Jersey City.  If any friends or family are truffle lovers, then pick up a box for them here! They won’t be disappointed.  They also serve freshly baked croissants in the morning, which pairs nicely with their flavorful lattes.

Iris Records – The perfect store for all those music lovers in your life.  They have an interesting assortment of new vinyl, dollar record selections and a knowledgeable owner who can point you in the right direction of finding the perfect record for someone special in your life.

Jersey City’s Friendsgiving

November 22, 2016

This year you can be a part of Jersey City’s first Friendsgiving party at the beautiful and unique Cathedral Hall.  Local celebrities Chicpeajc and HayOner will host the event and are known to throw the best parties in the Hudson County. It’ll be a fun dance party with DJ Stadium Status spinning all night.

Cathedral Hall, managed by Fourth Street Arts, is a non-profit geared towards fostering the arts and live music in Jersey City.  It maintains the original majesty and gander while serving as an event venue. Many popular events have been held at the space, such as the first annual North Jersey Indie Rock Festival which took place in September and showcased 20 bands.

If you get there early (9-11pm) you can enjoy free appetizers by Whealth and a complimentary whisky tasting by Misunderstood Whisky.

Whealth was founded in 2014 with a mission is to connect the community through delicious healthy eating and cooking.  Over the past two years, Whealth has grown from offering pop-up dinners and hosting private events to opening their own café in Jersey City and catering large events around NJ.

Speakeasy at Liberty Science Center

November 16, 2016

LSC After Dark is at it again! Bring your friends to an after-hours event at Liberty Science Center.  On Thursday, November 17th you’ll travel back in time at their “Science Speakeasy”.

At this event, you’ll meet expert whiskey distillers, taste their products and learn about the science behind this popular spirit from Jersey Wine and Spirits located in Jersey City.  They opened in 2008 after a large-scale renovation of what used to be Willies Liquor (established in the 1940’s).  You’ll find a vibrant crowd and weekly tastings at their store.

Attendees will also find a casino with blackjack, roulette, Texas hold’em and more. They are also encouraged to dress up in 1920’s-inspired outfits.  The LSC team will be giving out awesome prizes for the best-dressed guests, so dress swanky, baby doll!

There will also be a secret stage that can only be found by following clues throughout the venue.  Once you find the stage, you’ll get to experience an enlightening underground tech performance.  But wait, there’s MORE…you’ll get to also experience a new laser show in their massive IMAX Dome Theater and explore exhibits throughout the Science Center such as the touch tunnel, infinity climber, rock wall and more. These exhibits are open year-round, but they’re great to take advantage of when there’s no lines or children around. 😉

Tickets are $20.00 which is a great price compared to an upcoming Great Gatsby party in New York City which are selling for $95.00 (they don’t even have a casino!)  Only in Jersey City will you find something this unique and fun, not too far from your apartment here at Madox.

Matthews Food and Drink Opens in Jersey City

November 3, 2016

Another great restaurant has opened in Jersey City!  Mathews Food and Drink is the new hot spot in the area and we can’t wait to check it out.  You may have seen some of their signature drinks floating around social media such as their 80’s glam drink which is a fancy cocktail with confetti froth.  It also looks AND taste delicious from what we’ve heard.

The establishment was opened by the same owners of White Star Bar which is a very popular restaurant in Jersey City.  If you haven’t been here, you’ll want to add that to your to-do list!  It’s a casual restaurant and craft cocktail bar that has one of the best burgers in the city.  They use meat from Pat LaFrieda, bread from Balthazar and the freshest local veggies in New Jersey.  They have two locations in Jersey City because they are that good!

Mathews will be in the former La Conguita space and has received a nice redesign with a modern and spacious look.  Their cocktail menu was created by Cody Goldstein who is the founder of Muddling Memories.  They are a cocktail and bar consulting firm based out of New York City and know their stuff! We also heard that the Fisherman’s Stew is a must if you’re a seafood lover.  It’s a rich, seafood stew served in lobster broth and includes mussels, cod, crab, shrimp and clams.  Meat lovers will be happy to hear they have a nice grilled hanger steak which is served with crispy potato wedges, roasted tomato and chimichurri. Mathew’s also serves a vegan 5 Bean Cassoulet.

New Openings in Jersey City

November 30, 2015

Like most great cities, Jersey City is constantly adapting, growing, and improving. In that process, there are some new additions to our city worth checking out!

Bwe Kafe, a coffee shop with a social mission founded in Hoboken, recently opened their Jersey City location at 140 River Drive South. Bwè Kafe partners with world renowned coffee roasters La Colombe Torrefaction, to serve the highest quality beans, directly sourced from farms all over the world and brewed using perfected extraction methods. Working hand-in-hand with their mission to support the youth of Haiti, all coffee blends served at our coffee shops contain delicious Haitian beans, bursting with unique notes and fresh flavors.

Dark Side of the Moo, well-known for their exotic meats, opened their first brick and mortar location in the Heights this past weekend at 52 Bowers Street. With fleets of food trucks in Hoboken and Jersey City, their new restaurant is a welcome addition. Specializing in exotic meats and Americana with a twist, they work closely with the local community to source organic produce and find suppliers who use sustainable, ethical farming practices. Their game meats never use antibiotics or growth hormones, and are either farm or pasture raised, never receiving animal based feed.

And keep an eye out for a couple other places soon to open: Grind Coffee, 360 Communipaw Ave in Bergen-Lafayette is expecting to open December 1st, and The Cheesecake Factory, at Newport Mall, is set to have their Grand Opening on December 8th.

Holiday Markets in Jersey City

November 27, 2015

Holiday Mart kicked off at the Martin Luther King Drive Hub Shopping Center this past Saturday, offering city residents ice skating, live music, food trucks and about 20 different indoor craft vendors. The purpose of the event is to provide local small businesses a venue to make money and promote their businesses during the holiday season.

If you don’t find what you’re looking for at the Holiday Mart, never fear, Jersey City is full of places to shop! For a traditional mall experience, visit the three-level Newport Centre in Jersey City for more than 130 stores and four department stores.

The Jersey City Project celebrates its second anniversary with Project: Market on December 5th and 6th from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at City Hall. The heated outdoor market located in the Historic Downtown section of Jersey City will act as a kick-off to the holiday shopping season. Highlighting local, celebrating seasonal, and encouraging economic growth amongst small businesses, Project: Market is definitely the place to shop! With new vendors each day, there’s good reason to spend your weekend in downtown Jersey City.

Winter Workouts at Madox

November 24, 2015

With gym memberships costing anywhere upwards to $100 or more per month, and the impeding winter making trips out of the apartment less frequent, you may be looking for ways to stay in shape without spending a ton or putting on your snow boots. These are some easier alternatives here at Madox!

Yoga: Requiring little more than a mat (even a rug will do) and some comfortable clothes, this mix of relaxation and physical fitness is one of the easiest workouts to do at home. Familiarize yourself with some basic yoga postures like downward dog or child’s pose; everything you need to know can be found with a quick Google search. If you prefer to follow along with an instructor, check your TV’s OnDemand Fitness channel for some guided routines, purchase a yoga DVD or check out online options such as www.yogadownload.com. There are also some great yoga studios around us in Jersey City, with Yoga Shunya just down the street from us.

Strength Training: Buy a set of dumbbells that have adjustable weights, a couple resistance bands and any other equipment you think you’ll use, like a pull-up bar, kettle balls and/or an exercise ball. From there, your options are endless – create your own workout routine or find one you like in a fitness magazine. All of these items can be bought on Amazon, sometimes even used for an even cheaper option. You can find many of these items at our on-site gym, but we know there’s nothing quite like the convenience of working out in your own living room.

And of course, for a good sweat without going outdoors there’s always the option of heading on over to Madox’s state-of-the-art fitness center. Open every day for our residents’ convenience, it’s your best option for a winter workout!
