March 3, 2018

Even though Jersey City has outstanding wine and tapas bars, sometimes you want to get cozy in your Madox apartment with a great bottle of vino. Jersey City has excellent wine stores that carry some of the best wines from all over the world.  These stores also have weekly or monthly wine tastings and membership cards that you’ll want to take advantage of.

Cool Vines – Whether you’re shopping in their store or online, you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for because of their knowledge of wine.  The website is set up where you can search wines by body type (full bodied, light bodied, medium bodied, sparkling, etc.), style (dry, medium, modern, off-dry, traditional) and price range. Their goal at CoolVines to create an environment, both in their stores and on the web, where anyone can shop for wine without feeling overwhelmed by the complexity that often surrounds the experience of picking the perfect bottle.

Super Buy Rite – This store is known for their huge selection of wines, spirits, beers and great prices.      The staff is very helpful and you can also order online and they’ll deliver it for free (with orders over $60.00) to your Madox apartment. Grab a Cup of Coffee at these Jersey City Cafes

March 27, 2017

On a chilly March day, there’s nothing like a steaming cup of coffee to bring you back to life on a busy morning. Madox residents are lucky that in our Jersey City neighborhood, we have much more than just old Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks – instead, on every corner, we can find locally owned coffee shops that all have something different to bring to the table.

The Warehouse Café, located at 140 Bay Street in Jersey City which is about a half a mile from your Madox apartment, serves organic coffee and tea as well as paninis and sweets in a rustic-industrial space – alongside free wifi.

Besides classic drinks such as cappuccinos, lattes and espresso, the Warehouse Café also serves fun twists on favorite drinks such as an organic honey latte, a dulce de leche latte and a babyccino. All milk in the drinks is Hudson Valley fresh milk, or you can opt for all natural soy or almond milk.

Dames Coffee and Espresso Bar, located at 581 Jersey Avenue in Jersey City which is one mile from your Madox apartment, is a cozy coffee shop offering espresso drinks and housemade pastries in a brick-walled storefront.

Open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day of the week, this is a great place to stop to catch a breather from your busy day either to or from your Madox apartment for coffee and tea classics as well as homemade pastries.

Check Out These New Jersey City Restaurants Near Madox

March 20, 2017

Every Madox resident has their tried-and-true restaurant favorites that they flock to on a lazy night, however, Jersey City is chock-full of fantastic restaurants and luckily for Madox residents, there are tons of new ones that have recently joined the neighborhood.

Ani Ramen House, a popular ramen shop which has another location in Montclair, has officially brought its steamy, yummy ramen to Jersey City with their new location at 218 Newark Avenue, Jersey City, which is only one mile from your Madox apartment. Besides ramen bowls, you can also get some stellar pork buns, gyoza and even alcohol here, as the Jersey City location has a full bar, unlike the Montclair location.

Pork buns from the Ani Ramen House have been hailed by the New York Times as being equal to Momofuko’s in New York, a famous hotspot for the item. Check out what Chef Chris Arturo, the head chef of the Jersey City location, is cooking up here – he’s a veteran of Montclair’s Pig and Price and Newark’s Nico.

El Cocotero, which specializes in Venezuelan cuisine, including bite-size pastries, pressed sandwiches and entrees such as the traditional pabellon criollo, rice, beans, shredded beef and fried plantains, brings a whole new cuisine to Jersey City with its new location at 749 Bergen Avenue, Jersey City which is about two miles from your Madox apartment.

The original El Cocotero is in Chelsea and is famed for its arepas, the stuffed corn cakes that some believe will be the next food craze. Check these out at the new Cocotero, which just opened in Jersey City in February.

Krispy Kreme is Finally Opening in Your Madox Neighborhood

March 13, 2017

There’s nothing like a hot, freshly-made glazed doughnut, and as any Madox resident knows, the doughnuts that can be found at Krispy Kreme are some of the best. However, New Jersey residents have always had to go out of state to get them – until now.

Last month, Krispy Kreme opened its first-ever location in New Jersey at 95 Columbus Drive in Jersey City, which is only about a half a mile from your Madox apartment – the perfect walking distance for a delicious doughnut on a lazy weekend morning! And, this location is only the first of six coming to the area – over the next few years, five more are planned to open in Bergen and Hudson counties.

The 95 Columbus Drive location can make up to 65,000 doughnuts a day and can seat 45 people, so it’s definitely not your typical corner doughnut shop. It opens at 5 a.m. Monday through Friday and at 6 a.m. on the weekends, so it’s also very ideal for commuters.

Besides the original glazed doughnut, a favorite of many Krispy Kreme customers, the shop also offers tons of other doughnuts such as the chocolate hazelnut kreme, chocolate iced raspberry filled, cinnamon sugar and many more. And, besides doughnuts, they also have cinnamon buns, apple fritters and eclairs.

If you’re looking for a drink to go with your Krispy Kreme doughnut, there are tons of options at the shop such as the toffee mocha latte, caramel latte, hazelnut latte, skinny vanilla latte and more.

If you’ve got a sweet tooth or are just looking to treat yourself on the way to work from your Madox apartment, stop by the new Krispy Kreme today!

Where to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day Near Your Madox Apartment

March 7, 2017

Saint Patrick’s Day is right around the corner on March 17, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with some traditional Irish fare like corn beef and cabbage, bangers and mash and, of course, a tall glass of Guinness. Luckily for Madox residents, there are tons of authentic Irish pubs located right around the corner from home.

Willie McBride’s, located at 616 Grand Street in Hoboken which is about two and a half miles from your Madox apartment, has a wide array of draft beers as well as pub grub in a small, intimate space with open fireplaces as well as live music. On Saint Patrick’s Day, the live music at Willie McBride’s will start at 5 p.m. with Agus coming on at that time and the Nerds coming on at 11 p.m.

If you’re looking to get some traditional Irish grub during the festivities, then don’t miss out on the moonshine BBQ with beef short ribs, moonshine BBQ sauce, caramelized onions, mashed potatoes and vegetables or the stout sirloin steak with sliced marinated steak topped with caramelized onions over mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables.

The Dubliner, located at 96 River Street in Hoboken which is about two and a half miles from your Madox apartment, is a buzzy tri-level Irish pub with bar bites downstairs plus beer buckets and margaritas on the roof tiki bar. The largest bar in Hoboken, the Dubliner also has insane views of New York City from its rooftop bar.

From the menu, don’t miss out on traditional Irish fare such as the shepherd’s pie, which is freshly ground beef with vegetables and gravy, topped with mashed potatoes.

There’s a New Theater Series in Jersey City

March 3, 2017

Madox residents, if you’re a fan of theater, you’re probably already well aware that being in buzzing Jersey City, there’s no need to trek all the way to New York City to catch some quality plays. Now with a new series of staged readings happening at the Merseles Theater at 339 Newark Avenue in Jersey City, which is about a mile and a half from your Madox apartment, that couldn’t be more true.

Readings are currently scheduled through March 25, which will feature readings from both established and emerging playwrights to give visitors a taste of all that’s happening in the theater world. Plus, the readings are timely because March is Women’s History Month, and the plays that are being offered celebrate the resilience and determination of women.

The festival is a product of a partnership between the Jersey City Theater Center and the Writers Theatre of New Jersey. The next reading will be on March 8 at 7:30 p.m., when “Paterson Falls,” by Rosemary McLaughlin, will be read. This play investigates the Paterson Silk Strikes in 1912-13.

A stage reading by Stacie Lents will take place on March 16 at 7:30 p.m., which is a work of fiction based on interviews with prisoners at the Women’s Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center (WERDCC) in Vandalia, Missouri. The play is an astute and often humorous look at the lives of these women as they deal with issues associated with their incarceration.

All of the plays only cost a $5 donation per person, and the complete schedule of events can be found at jctcenter.org.

Outdoor Eating in Jersey City

March 21, 2016

With spring now here, let’s take a look at some of our favorite restaurants which have outdoor dining around Madox! This month the weather already reached the mid 70’s and people were outside sipping on beverages and enjoying the amazing cuisines of Jersey City. Be one of them at one of these awesome local eateries!

Jersey City takes their outdoor dining very seriously! Most establishments are able to put tables on the sidewalk or have roof top seating available. Porta of Jersey City offers 2 full bars on their roof. It’s a perfect spot to hang out with friends or colleagues.  If you want to stay in Paulus Hook you can walk over to Greene Hook or enjoy Iron Monkey’s rooftop bar as well. They also have a full bar and a very extensive beer list! Some of the best outdoor dining can be found here.

Now that the weather is getting warmer we can look forward to Surf City opening! If you haven’t been here you’re missing out. This “beach megabar” offers 5 full bars and their outdoor bar is right on the Hudson River with amazing views of the city.  You can order a drink and sit there or go over to their beach area and grab a lounge chair!

Pier 13 in Hoboken will also be opening up! The pier offers spectacular views of the city and has a full bar with food trucks.  If it’s a nice day you can take the ferry over from our apartment building and be there in 30 minutes.

Farmers Markets in Jersey City

March 18, 2016

Spring is right around the corner! Lucy for us, we have so much to look forward to here in Jersey City. We’ve been waiting for the farmers markets to come back to all the great parks we have within our city.

By shopping at Jersey City farmers markets, some of the not too far from Madox, residents reduce their carbon footprint by eating locally grown goods.  Healthy shopping is easy with farmers markets open almost every day of the week in spring.  The first of the farmers markets to open is in Van Vorst Park is open on Saturdays from 8am- 3:30pm in April.

If you can’t wait until April to enjoy the fresh air and fresh food, you can head over to the Hudson Farmers Market on Kennedy Boulevard.  They have been providing excellent service for over 25 years.  They are also a garden center, so you can add fresh flowers to your Madox apartment to welcome spring as well.

A local Jersey City resident, Ali, has a website inspiralized.com which can provide you recipes on how to make delicious and healthy meals using the vegetables from the market and her spiralizer machine.  Her site gives you recipes such as zucchini spaghetti with fresh pesto and tomato, butternut squash noodles with chicken, chicken and chickpea broccoli noodle pasta and much more! You can even do a gluten free, paleo or vegan meal plan for $4.99 a week.

Here’s some more information on the Hudson Farmers Market and the spiralizer!

March To-Do List Around The Madox

March is Jersey Shore restaurant month. Check out these restaurants that will be offering prix fixed menus! We suggest checking out the The Bonney Read. The menu sounds delicious and so do their Yelp reviews.  Asbury has some awesome dining options! It’s about an hour away which makes it ideal for a day trip. March 13th is also Asbury’s St. Patrick ’s Day festival.

If you love flowers like we do here at The Madox then you’ll want to visit the orchid show at the New York Botanical Garden. If you want to make a romantic evening of it then you can do Orchid Evenings where they add romantic music and cocktails. This runs until April 17th.

Art Around Jersey City & Hoboken

March 1, 2016

Art lovers rejoice! Did you know there are galleries all over Hoboken and Jersey City? More than just places to view the latest in the art world, these venues can also be a great place to host a party or fundraising event.

Mana Contemporary in Jersey City has become very successful and proves you don’t need to go into New York City to see famous artwork.  Artists such as Gary Lichtenstein have artwork displayed at Mana and he even stops into the venue here and there to help with creative ideas. They have a restaurant in the building as well so you can stop in for a bit before or after you take a tour.

Barsky Gallery is located on 49 Harrison Street and is a beautiful gallery! They are open from 11am-6pm Wednesday through Sundays.  What’s better than enjoying some brunch and mimosas then heading over for a leisurely afternoon at a relaxing gallery? Barsky Gallery will also be at the Scope New York Art Fair on March 3rd, an art show that changed the landscape of the contemporary art fair industry.  This is a great achievement for this Hoboken gallery and speaks volumes to how successful they’ve been. Make sure to check it out!

Hob’art Gallery is a great place to visit for free art at their monthly art shows which usually start off with food, drinks and nice conversation! They also have classes you can sign up for and occasionally show free films. Free parking is available at the rear of the building on Jackson Street.

Kraverie – Korean BBQ and Crepes Take Over Jersey City

March 21, 2013

Madox Featured Guest Blog Banner

Before food trucks began to disappear in Jersey City, two of my favorite food trucks ruled the streets of Newport and Grove. Krave food truck opened my eyes and palate to one of the most exciting experiences of my culinary life. I would gleefully devour Korean BBQ served as tacos, topped with scallions, kimchi and so much more. Afterwards, I eagerly made my way to Lucinda Creperie for a fresh crepe made before my eyes and filled with cheesecake, Nutella, strawberries and bananas. (more…)
