Super Bowl in Jersey City

January 30, 2018

The Super Bowl is just weeks away and there are plenty of places in Jersey City to watch the game while you indulge in delicious pub grub.  Whether you’re looking for great wings, multiple TV’s or an energetic crowd, these places have it all.

PJ Ryans – PJ Ryan’s is a corner tavern in the heart of downtown Jersey City, offering a cozy and inviting space, great craft beer, wine and liquor and a menu that puts a modern twist on traditional Irish Pub fare.  Their bar is never too crowded but has great energy. Check them out for nightly drink specials, weekend bunch and year-round sports action on eight big TV’s. This is a top pick for watching Super Bowl LII.

HopScotch – HopsScotch™ opened in 2012 and is the passion project of owners Luke and Sarah Gomez.  Luke is a beer guy, Sarah is a scotch gal, and they both love sports.  After a few years of trying and failing to find a win-win option, HopsScotch was born.  The best beer, the best scotch, every sport you can imagine and great food.  With 21 televisions, games on the tables, shuffleboard and darts, their mantra is “Where Recess Meets Happy Hour,” making it another ideal spot to watch the Super Bowl.

Dorrians – First opening in 1960 in Yorkville, NY, Dorrian’s has been a staple for decades, serving delicious American fare and popular beers and cocktails to generations of neighbors, locals, and their families.  In the 50+ years since it opened, Dorrian’s has expanded from a humble little corner bar serving loyal regulars to a fully-realized restaurant space with a closed in outdoor cafe and a smaller, intimate back room with its own bar. They have proudly maintained that “old neighborhood” charm of Yorkville, while operating with current and modern tastes and sensibilities of today’s customers. Their long-standing tradition of Dorrian’s has continued in Jersey City and it’s one of our favorite places to watch a football game, especially the Super Bowl!

Speakeasys in Jersey City

January 10, 2018

You don’t have to cross the river to find a cozy speakeasy near the Madox. There are a few of these secret bars tucked away in Jersey City that are the perfect venues to take refuge from the cold while enjoying a cocktail, getting cozy with friends, or indulging in warm delicious food. We’ll let you in on our three favorite hidden gems that you’ll want to check out (if you haven’t already): Dullboy, PS Wine Bar and Miss Wongs.

Dullboy – This speakeasy is known for their craft cocktails, dinners and eccentric ambiance. On their drink menu they have 10 signature cocktails, 10 classic cocktails and serve wine by the glass.  If you follow them on social media (@dullboybar) then you know each drink is made with love and lots of flavor! Two of their signature cocktails we suggest sipping on are the “The Kayla” (grand cognac champagne reserve cocktail with blood peach and blood orange bitters) for an enjoyable day time drink and “The Grazia (Kinahans Irish whiskey, Maurin Quina, cola syrup, orange & lemon juice, egg white) for a cold winter evening.

PS Wine Bar – Located in the cellar of Pet Shop, PS Wine Bar offers organic wines, craft beers and vegetarian/vegan fare.  We are a huge fan of their Buffalo Cauliflower (crispy cauliflower florets tossed in traditional buffalo sauce. Served with vegan ranch, carrots, and celery).  They also have monthly wine tasting classes and live music.

Miss Wongs –Every Thursday – Saturday, Talde opens up their underground speakeasy bar where you’ll find a dance floor, DJ’s and a signature cocktail menu.  It’s dimly lit and provides some seating but once the DJ comes on, most people hit the dance floor.  Check Miss Wong’s Instagram page (@misswongsjc) for weekly posts on upcoming events and DJ’s.

Jersey City Restaurant Week

January 30, 2017

If there’s any restaurants in Jersey City you’d like to try, now is the time! Hudson Restaurant Week will run until February 3rd and there are some great menus and dining options available.

Laico’s – This is a classic Italian restaurant in Jersey City that almost every foodie in the area has heard of.  If you love Italian dishes, we recommend making a reservation ASAP.  They have many options to choose from and $5.00 Tito’s drink specials.  Try their famous artichoke hearts or buratta salad to start and for an entrée try their veal parm, 14oz sirloin steak (with bleu cheese and mushrooms) or their French cut chicken (just to name a few).  End the evening with a nice tartufo, homemade pound cake with ice cream or chocolate cake.

Raval – For $30.00 you’ll get a 3-course meal and a drink of choice (draft beer, house wine or sangria).  Some items from the dinner menu include pan-seared prawns, butternut squash soup and mushroom croquetas.  As far as entrees, indulge in their polla a la plancha, paella (chicken, chorizo or vegetable) or a hardy burger.  They’ll serve their classic flan and bread pudding for dessert.  You’ll also love their authentic Spanish décor.

Amelia’s Bistro – A favorite here in Paulus Hook! Amelia’s is just steps away from our building so you don’t have to worry about parking or getting an Uber.  They have a fantastic 3-course dinner menu available as well.  We suggest starting with the pan-seared risotto cakes, kale salad or the sprouts and bacon thin flat bread.  For an entrée try the chicken sauvignon, skillet-seared cauliflower or the braised boneless short ribs, yum! End the night with a homemade apple skillet or tiramisu.

Jersey City’s Hottest New Bars for Winter

January 16, 2017

Another cool bar and restaurant has opened in Jersey City!  Pet Shop is the new neighborhood hot-spot that has everything you need: a jukebox, great drinks, food, an attentive staff, a photo booth and monthly events.  This is a unique bar because it serves mostly vegetarian dishes.  At Pet Shop, you’ll find Portobello fingers (parmesan breadcrumb crusted portabella strips served with honey mustard and red pepper aioli), cheese plates, poutine, lentil salad, cauliflower parm, and more.

The inside of Pet Shop is cozy and during the warmer months you can enjoy their outside area.  Wine lovers will also be happy to hear that they serve delicious red, white, and sparkling wines; they even added a wine bar in their basement! During the winter, we suggest their Pinot Nero (cherries, earthy taste at $12.00) or the Monastell ‘Joven’ Vina (dried blackberries at $9.00).  If you’re a beer lover, don’t worry, they have some great choices such as the Morning Glory (IPA) and the Matthias (Amber Ale) from Italy. Pet Shop is owned and operated by long-time Jersey City locals so they know exactly what Jersey City residents are looking for.  This month, Seinfeld fans can look forward to Seinfeld Trivia night on January 24th.

9C Tavern is also a popular neighborhood bar which just reopened this month.  They serve healthy options such as homemade hummus, veggie burgers and much more.  9C is known for their inexpensive drinks and great staff.  Brunch lovers will want to try their “Bloody Irishman” which is a classic Bloody Mary topped with Guinness and candied bacon, phew!

Ice Skating in Jersey City

January 12, 2017

If you’re looking to start 2017 with a healthy and active lifestyle, we have you covered! Do you know that ice skating has many benefits and there are two rinks right here in Jersey City?  Ice skating has been a winter tradition here in Jersey City and the rinks will be open until March.

Some of the benefits include: better balance, improved joint flexibility, helps build leg muscles (similar to yoga or running), aerobic exercise, builds endurance, burns calories (up to 300-600 an hour depending on intensity), relieves stress and is great for your overall mental health since you’re outside getting fresh air and enjoying the company of friends and family.

Newport Skates is an outdoor rink located near Market Village, a residential area in Newport, Jersey City. This rink has a more intimate feel and you’ll also get a nice glimpse of the New York City skyline.  They also offer private lessons for anyone looking to step-up their skating game.  After your workout, you can head over to Loradella’s for a delicious salad or healthy entrée.

Charles Heger Pershing Field Ice Rink provides rentals, classes and a concession stand where you can buy snacks and warm up with endless hot cocoa.  This is a larger rink than Newport Skates making it a great place for hockey games.  A great bonus about this rink is that they offer free sessions with paid entry price! Lucky for you, after you work-up an appetite you can head over to Andrea Salumeria which is right around the corner from the rink.  They were recently voted the best sub place in New Jersey! You’ll love their fresh homemade mozzarella.

Jersey City Wins Curbed Cup 2016

January 5, 2017

The winner is in…Jersey City has won the Curbed Cup 2016 challenge and was crowned ‘NYC Neighborhood of The Year’.  This is the first time a neighborhood outside of New York City has won the competition.

For those of you who have never heard of the Curbed Cup, here’s a little background on it.  Curbed puts 16 neighborhoods, head to head over a few weeks in efforts to find the neighborhood of the year.  This year Jersey City went against Greenpoint in Brooklyn, South Village in NYC, Prospect Heights in Brooklyn, and the Financial District in the final round.

Jersey City won this competition because of our short commute to the city, restaurants, bars, strong community, and parks.  Recently they released the 87 Best Bars in New Jersey and Jersey City was on the list 8 times and secured the number one spot with Lucky 7 Tavern.  Other bars on top of the list include Healy’s Tavern, Fox and Crow, The Pet Shop, The Coffee Shop, Dorrian’s Red Hand, O’Hara’s Downtown, and Iron Monkey.  Whether you are looking for a wine bar, tiki bar, gastro-pub, family park or live music, Jersey City has it all.   The opening of White Eagle Hall, a new music venue, to the city also helped to gain us the win.

Some community events you can look forward to are the David Bowie Tribute Party on Sunday, January 8th and the Midnight Market at Harborside Atrium on February 10th (sells out quickly).

Valentine’s Day in Jersey City

January 31, 2016

We came up with three of our favorite restaurants in Jersey City to bring your special someone this Valentine’s Day. If you want to stay home, don’t worry we have you covered for the best places to pick up a delicious meal!

Liberty House Restaurant – Located on the waterfront of Jersey City, Liberty House has AMAZING views of the New York City skyline. You can’t get any more romantic than that! They will be offering a mouth-watering three course menu on Saturday February 13th and 14th. You’ll choose an appetizer such as jumbo shrimp cocktail, lobster bisque or harvest Salad…to name a few. For entrees you will have 9 options which include steaks, pastas or seafood. How good does surf and turf sound? Or maybe brioche-crusted salmon is more up your alley! Don’t forget to leave room for dessert! One of our favorites that they serve is the chocolate fondue for two.

Madame Claude Café – this eccentric BYOB French restaurant is romantic and you’ll feel like you’re dining in France! They have some of the best escargot and crepes the city has to offer! You can stop by their wine store Madame Claude Wine to pick up the perfect bottle of French wine to pair with your meal as well! The café will also be offering a three course Valentine’s Day menu!

Hamilton Inn – we love this classic Italian restaurant in Hamilton Park. The restaurant is dimly lit with candles and serves some of the tastiest Italian food in Hudson County. It’s not too loud making it a perfect spot for a romantic date. They also have delicious cocktails! Enjoy!

The Historic Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theater of Jersey City

January 28, 2016

One of Jersey City’s most well-known landmarks if the Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theater, one of the majestic “wonder theaters” built during the roaring 20s around the NYC metropolitan area. Jersey City’s historical theater is the only one still showing movies, and it’s a sight any Jersey City must see while calling our city home.

The Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theater opened September 28th, 1929 in Journal Square, Jersey City. The cost of construction was $2 million and on opening day they presented the film Madame X which brought in over 3,000 patrons. The theater had a three segment orchestra pit installed so that it would be capable of live performances along with films.   The lobby of the theater was quite impressive with a grand chandelier and a three story oval entrance. The bathrooms were also one of a kind on the second floor with elaborate decorations and additional space for makeup application and socialization. You can still see the original details and architectural prowess in their lobby today.

The Theatre’s stage was large for its day and acts from Manhattan’s Capitol Theatre regularly toured the Loew’s Jersey. Most of the stars of the early and mid-1930s performed at the Loew’s theater such as Duke Ellington, Bing Crosby, Jean Harlow, Burns and Allen, Bing Crosby, Bill Robinson, Jack Benny, Bob Hope and Cab Calloway.

In 1986 nearby malls had lured away much of the high-end retail business that the area once enjoyed and multi-plex cinemas had taken much of the Loew’s Jersey’s business. The theater closed and there were plans to demolish it and build something new on site. However, being such a historic building, people teamed up and campaigned to save the building and succeeded! The theater was then sold to its current owner, the city of Jersey City.

Restoration took place from 1986-1996 with the help of volunteers who restored the seating and installed projection equipment which allowed them to show films again.

Fun Facts: In 2011 The Strokes shot a music video for their single “Under Cover of Darkness” and the Trans-Siberia Orchestra filmed “The Ghost of Christmas” there as well. Now the theater also serves a popular place for fundraisers, corporate events and weddings.

Thrillist Media Group recently named the theater the most beautiful building in New Jersey!

Focus on Yourself at Madox in 2016

January 4, 2016

After a long weekend off, the craziness of shopping during the holidays and the excessive eating, you may be feeling a bit stressed and sluggish.

Take a few moments to yourself and think about your personal goals for 2016. Do you want a new job? Save more money? Spend more time with your family? Try a new hobby or activity? Once you realize what you would like to change or begin you can start working on your goals!

We all know that accomplishing our resolutions is harder than it seems. Some techniques that may help with achieving these goals may be keeping a journal throughout the day and changing your computer password to your goal, i.e., “family” “exercise” “car”. Create systems or ways to reach your goal. If your goal is to get a new job, write down what you will need to do in order to get hired! Maybe you want to apply to 5 jobs a day, work on your resume and practice going over interview questions. If you want to lose 15 pounds in 2016, write down what your weaknesses are whether it’s cutting back on sweets or limiting alcohol consumption to weekends.

Another tactic to help accomplish your goal may be to discuss them with your friends, family members or colleagues. Maybe they can motivate you not to stray away from your goals…or put a little pressure on you.

Printing out copies of your resolutions and posting them on your fridge, keeping a small copy in your wallet or keeping one at your work desk will also help you to stay focused in 2016.

Keep in mind, with our great location next to transportation, commerce, and the city, along with our list of modern amenities, it’s easy to relax in your apartment at Madox and focus on yourself at home. Come take a tour with us this month and see the lifestyle you could start living here in Paulus Hook. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2016 from Madox!
