A short walk up a flight of carpeted stairs leads you to a place the flashing neon sign outside had promised, Honshu Lounge. This sushi hot spot in trendy downtown Jersey City is one worth visiting and located not too far from Madox Apartments. It has everything a good restaurant should offer. A relaxed, laid back ambiance, with clean, attractive décor that keeps your eyes happily busy as your meal is prepared by smiling chefs.
Having sat down and eaten with the owner and manager (not knowing I would be reviewing their restaurant) it all made sense as to why the quality of everything in this establishment was top notch. The people running this place genuinely care about each diner’s experience. They happily recounted choosing the purveyors of the fresh sea urchin we were gleefully devouring. The comparison of the red snapper and mackerel, in texture and flavor.
It was an exciting experience to hear about where my fish was coming from, as I was consuming it. Better than dinner and a movie was the narration of each fish’s life, the ocean it came from and how it got on my plate. Nothing could make a food lover happier.
My suggestion is to not be fearful and order from the sushi bar. Their plating is exceptional for every dish, big or small. Once you pass the initial shame of destroying a work of culinary art, you will instantly forget where you are, focusing on the bursts of flavor with every bite.
Their dishes are not doused in sauces, clouding the fish’s natural oceanic flavor. Keeping the main focus on the protein, everything else simply accentuates the meat. Don’t worry my vegetarian friends! There are plenty of options for you as well. Their quality of vegetables is equally matched to their fish in that I tasted crisp, fresh radishes, cucumbers and carrots woven into my rolls.
I highly recommend this place for a date with that special someone, a business lunch with co-workers, or even a night out with friends. It’s an intimate, sophisticated yet inviting environment where everyone is welcome for a bite, and invited to stay as a friend. You can get more information about Honshu on Facebook.
